Wat is a phlox plant?

Phlox – also spelled flox – are beautiful, vibrant flowers that have existed since ancient times. The phlox is a type of flower that belongs to the Polemoniaceae family. Phlox flowers originate from North America and come in a variety of colors, including white, pink, purple and red. They are popular because they are relatively easy to grow and maintain. They also produce an abundance of flowers, making them ideal as cut flowers.

Why is phlox so popular?

Phlox flowers are loved for their showy appearance and sweet fragrance. They come in various colors. At FAM Flower Farm, you’ll find them in creamy yellow, orange and shades of red or purple.

History of the phlox

The phlox plant is a beautiful, fragrant flower with a centuries-long history. Originally from North America, phlox was first discovered by European settlers in the 1600s. Since then, it has been widely cultivated and is now a popular choice in gardens worldwide. There are dozens of phlox varieties, but they all share common features. Phlox flowers are typically large and eye-catching, with five star-shaped petals. Their history is fascinating. These blooms have been used for religious ceremonies and medicinal treatments. The roots were used to relieve pain and fight colds, soothe infant stomach pain, make tea, and treat eczema. Today, phlox remains a favorite for its beauty and symbolic value.

Planting and caring for phlox

You can plant phlox seeds in spring or autumn. Planting is simple. All you need is a well-drained spot in your garden that gets plenty of sunlight. Once you’ve found the right place, loosen the top layer of soil and make 2 or 3 shallow grooves about 0.5 cm deep.

Sow the seeds 1 to 2 cm deep. Try to sow them sparingly to avoid crowding. Cover the seeds with a layer of sand that’s the same thickness as the seed. Phlox goes dormant in winter, so you don’t need to water it unless overwintering indoors. Phlox blooms from July to September or October.

Combining phlox

Phlox blooms at the same time as dahlias, making them a great match. The colors of phlox pair beautifully with pink or red dahlias. Other flower seeds you can combine with phlox include Amaranthus or Zinnia.

Want to enjoy flowers even longer? Plant narcissus or tulip bulbs in October to extend your blooming season.
