About Amaranthus
The amaranthus, also known as love-lies-bleeding or amaranth, is a flower that has been cultivated since ancient times. This plant belongs to the amaranthaceae family, which includes more than 60 different species. Amaranthus comes in many colours, ranging from white to purple and brown. The seeds themselves are small and dark brown, yet they carry a wealth of nutrients and minerals that help keep your garden healthy.
What is Amaranthus?
Amaranthus is a striking ornamental flower that comes in many colours, types and varieties – from trailing to upright forms. The petals are often rounded or oval in shape. The plants bloom well into autumn and the flowers are widely used both as cut flowers and as dried flowers.
Planting Amaranthus
Amaranthus is an annual plant. It can tolerate a light frost, but nothing more. That’s why it’s important not to sow the seeds too early. The best time to sow outdoors is in May. If you’d like to start earlier, you can pre-sow indoors in March or April to get a head start. When planting amaranthus seeds, make sure the soil is moist enough. Sow the seeds about half a centimetre deep and give them enough space to grow. Amaranthus thrives best in a sunny spot or partial shade.
Our annual amaranthus varieties are very easy to care for – they don’t need much water or fertiliser. Perfect if you don’t have green fingers!
How to Plant Amaranthus?
- Sowing time: May (or earlier indoors in March/April)
- Soil: Keep the soil moist, with a sowing depth of 0.5 cm
- Location: Sunny or partial shade
- Care: Amaranthus requires little water and fertiliser – ideal for beginners!
When Does Amaranthus Bloom?
Amaranthus flower seeds are best sown in spring or early summer. The plants will begin to bloom from June through to September.
