Zinnia

The zinnia is a real asset to your garden and they are also very easy to grow. All our zinnia flower seeds are annual. Within one season they grow from a small seed into a mature plant with flowers.

History of the zinnia flower

The zinnia flower is part of the so-called Asteraceae, also known as the sunflower family, and originally comes from Mexico.

Zinnias are named after Johann Gottfried Zinn, an eighteenth-century German botanist who specialized in medicinal plants. The zinnia became a popular garden flower in the 19th century because of its wide color palette and its ability to bloom even in warm summer weather.

Planting zinnia seeds

The zinnia is easy to grow and is therefore perfect for the gardener with two left hands. The plant prefers full sun and well-drained soil. So make sure the flower gets plenty of sunlight and enough water.

Sow the seeds about half a centimeter deep and about 12 centimeters apart (this is about 30-31 centimeters). This way they get enough space to grow and to draw water from the soil.

Caring for the zinnia

Water the plant when the soil feels dry. If the soil still feels wet, the zinnia does not need water yet.

Zinnia flowers love full sun, so make sure they get six to eight hours of sunlight per day. It is best to fertilize the zinnia seeds every four weeks with an organic fertilizer or lava meal. This improves the soil and strengthens the plant.

You can pinch the plants (top) so they grow faster. Regularly cut off dead zinnias so that the flowers keep blooming.

Tip: by using copper tape, you can prevent slugs and snails from eating the flowers. If slugs or snails crawl on the tape, they get a small shock. This makes the slugs immediately leave and not come back.

When does the zinnia bloom?

You can plant the zinnia seeds when the chance of frost is over. This is often around mid-May. They will bloom from July to September. At the same time as zinnias you can plant dahlia tubers, these bloom in July. These two look beautiful together. From October to mid-December you can plant narcissus bulbs and tulip bulbs. The narcissi bloom in February, March or April and the tulips in April or May. This continues until the first night frost in October or November.

Different combinations

We sell zinnias in orange, green and pink colors. You can combine the different colors. But of course you can also combine the zinnia with dahlia tubers. Red dahlias and yellow dahlias have a beautiful color and match nicely with the zinnia.
