About the Matthiola

Matthiola Incana is also known as stock or simply Matthiola. These beautiful flowers vary in color and release a sweet, pleasant scent. That is what makes Matthiola so popular among gardeners and florists. What makes Matthiola extra special is its symbolic meaning. In the language of flowers, matthiola stands for love, loyalty and friendship. That is why these flowers are often used at weddings.

A bit of history about the Matthiola plant

Stock is not only known for its colorful appearance but also for its symbolism and meaning in different cultures. Matthiola originates from the Mediterranean region and is a biennial plant in the carnation family.

The history of stock goes back a long way. They were first cultivated in ancient Rome where they were valued for their fragrant flowers and decorative value. In the Middle Ages, Matthiola flowers were also used for medicinal purposes because of their supposed healing powers. The flowers were often used in herbal infusions and ointments to treat various ailments.

The scent of the stock flower

A special characteristic of Matthiola is its scent which becomes stronger at night. That is why stock is also known as night-scented stock. This fragrant trait has made the flower popular in perfumery where the unique aroma is used. How lovely to have that fragrance at home.

Planting and caring for Matthiola

Since stocks are annuals they grow vigorously. Within one season they go through all the stages from seed to mature flower that produces new seeds. Plant the seeds in full sun because they need plenty of sunlight. Sow them in moist soil and cover the seeds with a thin layer of earth. Do not forget to water them regularly.
