Dahlia from our own nursery

The dahlia tubers come from our own dahlia nursery, allowing us to guarantee top quality. Our dahlias are very easy and rewarding plants in the garden. From a dahlia tuber grows a large plant that blooms for months and produces dozens of flowers. The more flowers you cut from the plant, the more new buds will bloom. You can cut off spent flowers or cut fresh flowers for indoors or on the garden table, so you can enjoy them twice as much.

Types of dahlia tubers

Dahlias come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. We offer red dahlias, white dahlias, and other special dahlias. Since our dahlia tubers come from our own nursery, some are even exclusively available here. Some dahlias are real butterfly and bee attractors. These are the single-flowered dahlias with an open heart, like the dahlia Edge of Joy.

There are also different dahlia forms. The ball dahlia is very unique because of its special shape. Their mathematical forms immediately stand out. From light pink dahlia Wizard of Oz to dark red dahlia Mirella: at FAM Flower Farm, you’ll find all kinds of (ball) dahlias. There are also different sizes of dahlias. Tall and medium dahlias are perfect for the garden, and low dahlias are ideal for pots.

Some dahlia varieties

Planting dahlias

Dahlias are beautiful summer bloomers that love warmth. The ideal planting time is after the risk of frost has passed. This is usually from mid-May. Don’t plant dahlia tubers later than mid-June, so they can bloom from July. The dahlia blooms until the first night frost in October or November. It is not difficult to plant dahlias; they grow in almost any soil type and don’t need to be planted deep (2 cm below the surface is enough). Make sure the soil is not too dry.

Caring for dahlias

Dahlia care is not difficult either. The only thing you have to do is water when it is dry. We recommend supporting taller dahlias so they stay upright during strong winds. But you can also keep taller dahlias shorter by pinching them. This makes the plant wider and produces more flowers. And then, after summer, can the dahlia survive the winter? In other words: is a dahlia hardy? The tuberous dahlia is a perennial, but unfortunately, hardy dahlia tubers do not exist. If you want them to bloom again next year, you should dig them up and overwinter frost-free.

Dahlia in pots

Less space in your garden? Plant the dahlia in pots! Especially the shorter varieties are very suitable for pots. You can start potting dahlias in April so they bloom earlier and you have less trouble with slugs. Make sure to water them regularly during a dry summer.

A bit of dahlia history

“Flower of princes and conquerors.”

Countless times it has propagated itself in all sorts of wondrous forms, with help from humans and pollinating bees. For centuries, it caused a craze among botanists, growers, and gardeners. This is the wondrous story of the simple daisy that grew into a world-famous beauty.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the flower became more and more fashionable. Wealthy people were willing to pay a lot to own such a status symbol. A real dahlia mania began. There is even a story that in France a dahlia plant was traded for a precious diamond.

The flower growers

A flower that excites everyone, you want to grow it. Since the dahlia mania, many flower growers have rapidly advanced the development of the plant. In 2020, there were five times as many dahlias registered in the dahlia register. Thousands of cultivars are not registered.
