    Different types of dahlias

Dahlias originally come from Mexico, where they grow naturally in the wild. Long ago, the flowers were grown as a food source and sometimes used as medicine.

People believed that dahlias had a soothing, pain-relieving effect. Today, there are more than 20 000 known varieties, in a stunning range of colours, shapes and sizes. Dahlias easily crossbreed, creating an endless mix of types. At FAM Flower Farm we offer cactus, fimbriata, pompon, ball, decorative and single‑flowered dahlias. Here is what makes each one special.

    Cactus dahlia

Cactus dahlias are known for their striking shape. The petals are rolled up for about two‑thirds, giving a bold spiky look. They may curl inward or outward. The petals are narrow and pointed. Some have deeply notched tips that create a dramatic effect.

Their unique shape lets rainwater run off easily. This keeps flowers light and upright even in rain. While many dahlias droop in wet weather, cactus dahlias stand proud and tall. They often come in vibrant colours that instantly catch the eye. No wonder they are named after the cactus – they share that bold spiky character.

    Fimbriata dahlia

The fimbriata dahlia has a look similar to the cactus type but with finely fringed petals, giving a playful elegant texture.

Also known as the deer antler dahlia, this variety gets its name from petal tips that split into multiple points, resembling delicate antlers.

    Pompon dahlia
    Ball dahlia

    Pompon dahlia

Pompon dahlias are compact, round and full of charm. Their petals are tightly rolled into a funnel shape and in the centre they form a spiral pattern.

Rainwater flows off easily so they don’t become heavy and stay beautifully upright.

    Ball dahlia

Ball dahlias are the larger sisters of pompon types. They share the rounded shape but are larger than five centimetres across. Their perfectly round petals sometimes catch little drops of water – a welcome treat for visiting insects.

    Decoratieve dahlia

The decorative dahlia is one of the most popular varieties. It features broad, flat petals that form a lush double bloom.

The petals are softly rounded near the centre and slightly more pointed toward the edges, creating a full beautiful shape.

    Single-flowered dahlia

Single‑flowered dahlias have just one ring of petals and an open heart. Their simple elegance is perfect for attracting bees and butterflies, who can easily reach the pollen. These varieties are a favourite in pollinator‑friendly gardens.
