Tips
When to sow Cosmos:
- Indoor sowing: From March–April.
- Direct outdoor sowing: From April–May, once all risk of frost has passed.
Sowing method:
- Sowing depth: Sow seeds about 0.5–1 cm deep in well-draining soil.
- Spacing: Keep 30–40 cm between plants for enough room to grow and good air circulation.
- Germination temperature: Between 18–22°C, with germination in 10–21 days.
Location and soil:
- Light: Full sun is ideal for abundant flowering. Cosmos also tolerates light partial shade, though it will bloom less vigorously.
- Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Overly rich soil may cause more leaf growth and fewer flowers.
- Fertilize: Cosmos usually flowers more abundantly in normal to slightly poor soil and stays sturdier. It’s best not to fertilize, or only very lightly. If you do feed it, choose a potassium-rich (for flowering) fertilizer later in the season, not a nitrogen-rich one.
Cosmos care:
- Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods, but avoid overly wet soil.
- Pinching: When the plant reaches 15–20 cm in height, pinch out the top growth tip to encourage bushier growth.
- Deadheading: Remove faded flowers regularly to prolong blooming and delay seed formation.
- Support: Since cosmos can grow quite tall (up to 1.5 metres), support the stems with mesh or bamboo sticks, especially in windy conditions.
Harvesting and use:
- Cut flowers: Cut blooms just as they begin to open for longest vase life.
- Combining: Pairs beautifully with other summer bloomers like zinnias, calendula, and dahlias for a colourful border.
- Low maintenance: Cosmos is a tough, low-maintenance plant with good drought tolerance.
How many seeds per square metre?
Each packet contains enough seeds for about 1 m² of flowers. This may vary by variety, so take the mature plant size into account. Tip: Don’t sow everything at once. Stagger your sowing to extend the bloom season and have a backup if the first sowing doesn’t go well. One tiny seed can grow into a full plant – give it enough space. Store your seeds in a cool, dry place – they’ll remain viable for 2 to 3 years.
