Tips
When to sow Phlox?
- Indoor sowing: From February–March for an early start
- Direct outdoor sowing: From April–May, once all risk of frost has passed
Sowing method
- Sowing depth: Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep. Phlox seeds are dark germinators, so cover with a thin layer of soil.
- Germination temperature: 18–21°C
- Germination time: Usually 7–21 days
- Spacing: Keep 20–30 cm between plants for good air circulation
Location and soil
- Light: Full sun to partial shade (in hot climates, light afternoon shade is recommended)
- Soil: Moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter
Phlox care
- Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry spells
- Deadheading: Remove spent blooms regularly to extend flowering and keep plants tidy
- Pinching: Pinch young shoots to encourage bushier growth and more flowers
Harvest and maintenance
- Cut flowers: Harvest regularly for bouquets to encourage continuous blooming
- Extended flowering: Keep removing faded flowers— with proper care, phlox can flower for months
Extra tips
- Pots and containers: Phlox grows well in pots. Choose containers with drainage holes and use airy, well-draining potting soil
- Feeding: Apply a liquid fertilizer occasionally during the growing season for richer flowering
- Disease prevention: Ensure good spacing to reduce fungal issues, especially in wet weather
How many seeds per square metre?
- Each packet contains enough seeds for about 1 m² of flowers (depending on variety and mature plant size).
- Tip: Don’t sow everything at once. Stagger sowing to extend the bloom season and keep a backup if the first round is less successful.
- One seed can grow into a full plant—give seedlings enough room.
- Store seeds in a cool, dry place: they remain viable for 2–3 years.
