Tips
When to sow
Indoor sowing: From March to April for an early start.
Direct outdoor sowing: From mid-May, once the risk of frost has passed.
Sowing method
Sowing depth: Sow seeds about 0.5 cm deep in well-draining soil.
Spacing: Keep 25–30 cm between plants to ensure good air circulation and healthy growth.
Germination temperature: Between 20–24°C. Seeds usually germinate within 7–10 days.
Location and soil
Light: Full sun is essential for abundant flowering.
Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil. Zinnias prefer warm, dry conditions and do not tolerate wet soil.
Care
Watering: Water regularly at the base of the plant to avoid mildew. Do not let the soil become waterlogged.
Pinching: When young plants are about 30 cm tall, pinch out the top growth tip to encourage branching and more blooms.
Cut flower test: Check if the flowers are ready to cut by gently shaking the stem at the base. If the bloom wobbles, it needs more time to mature.
Extra tips
Regular cutting: The more flowers you cut, the more new blooms the plant will produce.
Thinning: Thin out overcrowded seedlings to encourage strong, healthy plants.
Combining: Zinnias pair beautifully with other summer flowers like cosmos and dahlias for a colourful border.
How many seeds per square metre?
Each packet contains enough seeds for about 1 square metre of flowers. This can vary by variety, so take the mature size of the plants into account.
Tip: Don’t sow all at once. Spread sowing over several weeks to extend the blooming season and have a backup if the first round doesn’t thrive. A single seed can grow into a full plant, so give them enough room. Store your seeds in a cool, dry place – they stay viable for 2 to 3 years.
