Tips
When to sow
Indoor pre-sowing: From March–April.
Direct sowing outdoors: From April–May, once the risk of frost has passed.
Sowing method
Sowing depth: Sow the seeds shallowly and cover with a thin layer of soil (max 0.5 cm), as light aids germination.
Spacing: Maintain 25–30 cm between plants for adequate space and air circulation.
Germination temperature: Between 18–22°C. Seeds usually germinate within 10–14 days.
Location and soil
Light: Full sun to light partial shade. The plant blooms less profusely in shady areas.
Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Tanacetum also does well in poor soils, as long as they’re not too wet.
Care
Watering: Water moderately; the plant is fairly drought-tolerant. Avoid the soil drying out completely, especially for young plants.
Pruning: Remove spent blooms to encourage new flowers. After flowering, trim the plant to maintain shape.
Thinning: If seedlings are too close, thin them out to give space for healthy growth.
Harvest and use
Cut flowers: Harvest when the flowers are fully open for use in bouquets.
Dried flowers: Cut the stems when flowers are fully open and hang them upside down in a dry, airy place to dry.
Extra tips
Insect-repelling: Tanacetum has natural insect-repellent properties and is often planted around vegetable gardens to deter pests.
Self-seeding: The plant can self-seed easily; remove seed heads if you wish to prevent this.
Combining: Pairs beautifully with other dried flowers like limonium or achillea for a natural effect.
How many seeds do you need per square meter?
Each packet contains enough seeds for approximately 1 square meter of flowers. This may vary by variety, so consider the mature plant size. A helpful tip: don’t sow everything at once. Stagger your sowing to extend the blooming season and have a backup if the first round doesn’t succeed. One seed can grow into a full plant, so give them enough room. Store your seeds in a cool, dry place – they remain viable for 2 to 3 years.
