About Scabiosa

Scabiosa is a favourite among many gardeners. Its beautiful, unique flower shape and long blooming period make it a true standout. It adds a touch of elegance to your garden. The scabiosa has long stems topped with multiple small flowers grouped together. While often white or light pink, you can also find varieties in blue, red or yellow tones. The flower’s centre is usually darker than its petals, giving it a striking appearance. Known for its delicate beauty, scabiosa is a wonderful addition to both your garden and bouquets.

History of Scabiosa

Originally from Europe and Asia, scabiosa has been cultivated for centuries. These days, it is popular as a cut flower and also as a dried flower. Scabiosa is also known as pincushion flower and belongs to the teasel family. The name scabiosa comes from the Greek word "scabies," meaning itch. The plant earned its name because it was traditionally used to treat skin conditions like scabies, psoriasis and eczema. Today, its essential oil is used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation and calm.

Planting Scabiosa

The best time to plant scabiosa is in spring, once the last frost has passed. Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Once you've found the right location, sow the seeds about half a centimetre deep.

When does Scabiosa bloom?

Scabiosa blooms in late spring and early summer, preferring cool weather and moderate sunlight. Depending on your climate and conditions, it may start blooming as early as March or April, or as late as August or September. Early flowering is possible if seeds are started indoors or in a greenhouse during winter or early spring.

These Scabiosa Drumsticks also make beautiful dried flowers.

Pairing Ideas

Scabiosa pairs wonderfully with dahlias, which bloom around the same time. White and red dahlias work especially well with any scabiosa variety. Did you know you can enjoy eight months of colour in your garden? Simply plant narcissus and tulip bulbs  in October, November or December. Narcissus will bloom in February through April and tulips in April or May. After the last frost, plant your flower seeds and dahlia tubers. That way, you’ll enjoy a garden full of flowers and colour for months on end!
