About the aster flower
The aster is a beautiful flower to add to your garden this season. It’s a lovely addition to any landscape. The flower has aesthetic appeal, interesting symbolic value and practical uses.
History of the aster
Aster flowers are used in many different ways. The name aster comes from the Greek word for "star". This name suits the flower because the aster resembles a star.
The aster is also known as a symbol of love and loyalty. It is also associated with patience, elegance and courage. In some cultures, it was believed that the flower had magical powers, and they were used in spells and charms.
In ancient Rome, aster flowers were used in religious ceremonies and as gifts to the gods. At the time, it was also believed that the flower would bring good luck.
Today, the aster is still popular for its beauty and symbolism. They are often given as gifts for birthdays, weddings or other special occasions. They truly add a touch of elegance and beauty to your garden or bouquet.
Planting the aster
The aster flower loves full sun and well-drained soil. You can best plant the flower seeds in spring after the risk of frost has passed, which is around April or May. Make sure the soil is moist before planting. Sow the seeds 1 to 2 cm deep. Cover with a layer of sand equal in thickness to the seed.
Hoe the top layer of the soil to loosen it. Then make 2 or 3 shallow drills about 0.5 cm deep. Make sure to leave about 25 cm between the drills. After sowing, you can refill the drills with soil. Water the plants regularly.
Tip: read our guide on planting flower seeds for a more detailed description.
Combination options
You can combine asters with dahlias, for example. They bloom around the same time. Cactus dahlias and dinnerplate dahlias will look beautiful alongside asters. By planting different types of flowers at different times, you can enjoy a blooming garden for several months.
So plant tulip bulbs and narcissus bulbs in October or November as well.
The narcissus will bloom in February, March or April, and the tulips in April or May.
