Tagetes Sugar & Spice White, better known as marigold, is a versatile addition to both your garden and kitchen. You’re probably familiar with the brightly colored marigolds, but this is a beautiful white variety. Tagetes is a natural protector against pests in your vegetable garden. They improve the soil by combating harmful nematodes, making your garden healthier and more fertile. The fresh, mildly spicy petals are perfect for garnishing salads, desserts, or summery drinks. A plant that is both practical and ornamental, and moreover, easy to sow and care for!

    1 bag ≈ 0.65 grams ≈ 210 seeds

    Tips

    When to sow

Indoor pre-sowing: From March–April for an early start.

Direct sowing outdoors: From late April–May, once the risk of frost has completely passed.

    Sowing method

Sowing depth: Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in well-drained soil.

Spacing: Keep 15–30 cm between plants, depending on the variety (smaller types require less space).

Germination temperature: Between 18–22°C. Seeds usually germinate within 7–14 days.

    Location and soil

Light: Full sun provides the best blooms, though they can also tolerate light partial shade.

Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil. Tagetes are not demanding, but grow better with a little extra compost.

    Care

Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Ensure the soil is not too wet to prevent root rot.

Thinning: Thin out seedlings if they are too close together to encourage strong plants.

Deadheading: Regularly remove spent blooms to extend the flowering period.

    Extra tips

Natural pest control: Tagetes help repel pests such as nematodes, aphids, and whiteflies – ideal for vegetable gardens.

Long flowering: With proper care, Tagetes bloom from June until the first frost.

Pairing: Great companion plants for flowers or vegetables like tomatoes, as they help keep harmful insects away.

How many seeds do you need per square meter?

Each packet contains enough seeds for approximately 1 square meter of flowers. This may vary by variety, so consider the mature size of the plants. A helpful tip: don’t sow everything at once. Stagger your sowing to extend the blooming season and have a backup if the first batch doesn’t succeed. One seed can grow into a full plant, so give them enough room. Store your seeds in a cool, dry place – they will stay viable for 2 to 3 years.
