Even if you are not a sunflower fan, you can probably appreciate this lemon-yellow variety with a black heart. The flowers are not that big and therefore you can arrange them well in a bouquet. Many stems and flowers grow from each plant. Sunflowers are easy growers and require little care. When they have finished blooming, birds will love to feast on the sunflower seeds, the seeds of this variety are not that big so small birds also like to peck at them. 1 packet ≈ 0,3 gram ≈ 50 seeds

    Tips

    When to sow

Indoor pre-sowing: From March–April to get an early start and advance flowering.

Direct sowing outdoors: From mid-April to June, once all risk of frost has passed.

    Sowing method

Sowing depth: Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep in well-drained soil.

Spacing: Keep 30–45 cm between plants; for larger varieties, up to 60 cm may be needed.

Germination temperature: Between 15–25°C. Seeds usually germinate within 7–10 days.

    Location and soil

Light: Full sun is essential – the more sun, the stronger the stems and richer the blooms.

Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Sunflowers are vigorous growers and need plenty of nutrients.

    Care

Watering: Water regularly, especially in dry periods. Avoid waterlogged soil to prevent root rot.

Support: Use a stake or sturdy support to keep plants upright, especially for tall varieties or windy spots.

Rotating (indoor growing): If grown in pots indoors, rotate occasionally so the plant grows straight and doesn’t lean toward the light.

    Harvest and use

Seed harvest: Harvest sunflower seeds when the back of the flower head turns brown and the seeds feel firm. Cut the heads and let them dry in a dry, airy place.

Decorative use: Cut flowers when the petals are fully open and place in water immediately for cut flower arrangements.

    Extra tips

Bird feeding: Leave a few heads on the plants to provide food for birds in autumn and winter.

Companion planting: Sunflowers pair well with other summer bloomers like cosmos, zinnias, and dahlias for a colourful border.

Self-seeding: If you leave a few heads until the end of the season, sunflowers can self-seed for the following year.

How many seeds do you need per square meter?

Each packet contains enough seeds for approximately 1 square meter of flowers. This may vary by variety, so consider the mature size of the plants. A helpful tip: don’t sow all at once. Spread out sowing to extend the blooming season and have a backup if the first round fails. One seed can grow into a full plant, so allow enough space. Store your seeds in a cool, dry place – they’ll remain viable for 2 to 3 years.
