About pumpkin seeds

The pumpkin seeds in our collection are also known as Cucurbita. Cucurbita actually belongs to the cucumber family. Not all Cucurbita are edible, but the pumpkin seeds we offer certainly are. Be aware, however, birds and mice also love Cucurbita.

History of pumpkin seeds

Pumpkins have a long and fascinating history dating back up to 10,000 years in Central and South America, where Indigenous people first cultivated pumpkin seeds. Those ancient pumpkins were quite different from today’s varieties, being small and bitter.

When European explorers brought pumpkin to the Old World during the colonization of America, these fruits quickly became a key crop in many cultures, thanks to their versatility and nutrition.

In the 19th century American farmers began experimenting with different pumpkin types, developing larger, sweeter and more versatile varieties. This led to increased use in traditional dishes such as pumpkin pie and pumpkin soup.

Today pumpkins are an important crop worldwide, especially in North America and Europe, used not only as food but also as decoration during Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Symbolism of the pumpkin

Pumpkins are often associated with autumn decorations and Halloween. They symbolize fall, harvest and abundance. Hollowing out a pumpkin to make a lantern – like the traditional jack‑o‑lantern – has become a symbol of protection against evil spirits. In some traditions they are used in rituals to promote fertility and prosperity. The deep orange hue of a ripe pumpkin radiates warmth, coziness and vitality.

Growing pumpkin seeds

Growing pumpkins is a blast if you enjoy gardening. Watching these plants grow and bloom is a wonderful experience. When planting pumpkin seeds, ensure the soil is well‑drained and nutrient‑rich for optimal growth. Sow the seeds at about 2–3 cm deep and space them at least a metre apart so the plants have room to spread out. Water regularly without over‑saturating. Pumpkin seeds need warmth to germinate, so choose a sunny and sheltered spot in your garden. With patience, care and love for plants, you’ll soon enjoy home‑grown pumpkins from your own backyard.
