    Tips

    When to sow

Malva Sylvestris Zebrina can be sown indoors year-round in a seed tray.

Sowing method: First provide warmth (18–22°C) for 2–4 weeks, followed by a cold period of 4–6 weeks in the refrigerator (+4°C). After that, allow the seeds to gradually warm to room temperature, at which point germination will begin.

Germination: The seeds germinate irregularly and over a longer period, so don’t discard the seed tray too early.

Outdoor sowing: You can also sow directly outdoors and let winter provide natural stratification; germination will follow in spring.

    Location and soil

Light: Prefers full sun but also grows well in partial shade.

Soil: Well-drained, slightly dry soil is ideal.

Maintenance: Cut back spent flower stems to just below the top leaves to encourage reblooming.

How many seeds do you need per square meter?

Each packet contains enough seeds for approximately 1 m² of flowers. This varies by variety, so consider the mature size of the plants. A handy tip: don’t sow everything at once. Stagger sowing over time to extend the blooming season and have a backup in case the first attempt doesn’t go well. One seed can grow into a full plant, so give the seeds enough space. Store your seeds in a cool, dry place; they will remain viable for 2 to 3 years.

How much sun do annual flowers need?

Annuals bloom best in full sun, with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Ideally, more than 8 hours of sun will result in quicker and more abundant blooms. In shady areas, blooming may be limited.

    Planting instructions:

    • Moisten the soil so the seeds adhere well.
    • Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil; see the planting depth per variety on the seed packet or the product page.
    • Use fertile, well-drained soil.
    • Provide a sunny spot and protect from strong winds. Support plants if needed.
    • Water regularly and remove weeds.
