Tips
When to sow Lathyrus (Sweet Pea)
Indoor sowing: From February–March, 6–8 weeks before the last frost.
Direct outdoor sowing: From April, once the risk of frost has passed completely.
Sowing method
Sowing depth: The seeds need darkness to germinate. Cover them with a 2 cm layer of soil.
Germination temperature: Between 15–20 °C. Seeds usually germinate within 12–21 days.
Spacing: Keep 20–25 cm between plants for proper air circulation and room to grow.
Location and soil
Light: Full sun is essential for abundant flowering.
Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil with ample organic matter. Add compost or manure for extra nourishment.
Lathyrus care
Pinching: Pinch out the main stem above the third or fourth leaf pair to encourage bushier growth and more flower stems.
Side shoots removal: For long stems and larger blooms, remove side shoots regularly so the plant focuses energy on the main stem.
Support: Lathyrus is a climber and needs support. Use a trellis, netting, bamboo stakes, or fencing. Guide young shoots gently around the support until they can climb independently.
Height: Most varieties grow 1.5–2 m tall depending on conditions; some may reach even higher.
Harvest and use as a cut flower
Harvest timing: Pick flowers while at least two unopened buds remain at the top—this extends vase life.
Vase care: Use fresh water with flower food. Ensure stems are inserted only 3–4 cm deep to prevent rot.
Longevity: Flowers remain fresh in a vase for 5–6 days if water is changed regularly.
Extra tips
Regular picking: Picking frequently encourages more blooms.
Shade at the roots: Plant low flowers or mulch around the base to keep roots cool—this promotes flowering.
How many seeds per square metre?
Each packet contains enough seeds for about 1 m² of flowers. This varies by variety, so consider the mature size of the plants.
Tip: Don’t sow everything at once. Stagger sowing over several sessions to extend the flowering season and have a backup if the first batch doesn’t thrive. A single seed can grow into a full plant—give them enough space.
Store seeds in a cool, dry place; they remain viable for 2–3 years.
