Tips
When to sow Helichrysum
Indoor sowing: From March or April at room temperature (around 18–22°C). Seeds usually germinate within two weeks.
Direct outdoor sowing: From April or May, once all risk of frost has passed.
Sowing method
Sowing depth: The seeds are very small and need light to germinate. Scatter them evenly on the soil surface and press gently without covering with soil.
Spacing: Thin seedlings to about 15 cm apart when they are 4–6 weeks old. This prevents overcrowding and promotes healthy growth.
Germination temperature: Around 18–22°C, with a germination time of 10–14 days.
Location and soil
Light: Full sun is ideal for abundant blooms and strong stems.
Soil: Well-drained, light, sandy soil. Avoid wet, poorly drained soil to prevent root rot.
Helichrysum care
Watering: Keep the soil lightly moist after sowing. Once established, plants are fairly drought tolerant.
Transplanting: Seedlings grown indoors can be transplanted outdoors after the last frost (usually around mid-May).
Thinning: Ensure enough space between plants to promote air circulation and prevent fungal diseases.
Support: In windy areas, light support may be needed to keep the plants upright.
Harvesting and drying
When to harvest: Harvest flowers just before they are fully open for best results when drying.
Drying: Hang flowers upside down in a dry, well-ventilated space to preserve their colour and shape.
Combining: Helichrysum pairs well with dried flowers like limonium and amaranthus for natural bouquets.
How many seeds per square metre?
Each packet contains enough seeds for about 1 m² of flowers. This may vary by variety, so consider the mature size of the plants.
Tip: Don’t sow everything at once. Spread sowing across several weeks to extend the blooming season and have a backup if the first round doesn’t go well. A single seed can grow into a full plant, so give them enough room.
Store your seeds in a cool, dry place – they will stay viable for 2 to 3 years.
