Dinnerplates, also known as super dahlias or giant dahlias, are by far the most popular variety. These plate-sized blooms are delightfully fluffy and full. Just one of these dahlias makes a statement. No one can ignore them: wow, what a flower! They grow to at least 20 centimeters in diameter and can even hide an entire face.
Dinnerplate dahlias belong to the taller dahlia varieties and need extra support as they grow. A bamboo stake from the garden center works well. Use plant ties to gently secure the growing plant to the stake as it grows taller. Rubber ties are the most plant-friendly option.
TIP: Place the support in the pot at the same time as planting the tuber to avoid damaging or piercing it later.

What types of dahlias are there?
There are many types of dahlias in all shapes and colors, such as pompon, ball, double or single flowering dahlias, decorative, and cactus dahlias. Pink and white dahlias are among the most popular colors.
Dahlia tubers are also referred to as dahlia bulbs or dahlia flower bulbs. You can easily select your favorite varieties using the filters in our webshop. Lower-growing dahlia varieties are perfect for pots. Taller types are ideal cutting flowers for flower gardens, thanks to their long stems and many beautiful blooms. Some dahlias are especially attractive to bees and butterflies, particularly the single flowering varieties with open centers.
Floating bowls with dinnerplate dahlias
- Cut the stem from your dahlia flowers and place them in a pretty tub, large glass vase, or baking dish filled with water. The dahlias will float beautifully on the surface. You can even add floating candles for a magical touch.
- If you have one large dinnerplate dahlia, place it on a beautiful plate or shallow dish with a little water, or group several together in a deep bowl. If you have a pond, you can also let a few flowers float there.
- Change the water regularly.
