Tips
When to sow Delphinium
Indoor sowing: From February to March, 8–10 weeks before the last frost.
Direct sowing outdoors: From April to May, once all danger of frost has passed.
Sowing method
Sowing depth: Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in well-draining soil.
Spacing: Keep 30–40 cm between plants to allow for good air circulation and growth space.
Germination temperature: Between 15–20°C. Seeds typically germinate in 14–21 days.
Light: Delphinium needs light to germinate well, so choose a bright, warm spot.
Location and soil
Light: Full sun is ideal, but light partial shade is tolerated, especially on hot days.
Soil: Well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Add compost or organic fertilizer for richer blooming.
Delphinium care
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods. Ensure roots don’t sit in wet soil to prevent root rot.
Thinning: Thin shoots once they reach about 7 cm high, leaving 2–3 strong shoots per plant to encourage larger, sturdier flower spikes.
Support: Hollow stems are prone to breaking in strong wind or rain. Use mesh or stakes to support the plants.
Pruning: Remove spent blooms to encourage a second flowering in late summer.
Regular feeding: Feed plants during the growing season with a potassium-rich fertilizer to boost blooming.
Harvesting and drying
Cut flowers: Harvest when 1/4 to 1/3 of the flowers on the stem are open. Place stems in water immediately for longer vase life.
Drying: Let the flowers fully open before drying. Hang stems upside down in a dry, airy place to preserve shape and color.
Combining: Combines beautifully with other perennials such as lupins, roses, and campanulas for a classic border.
How many seeds per square meter?
Each packet contains enough seeds for approximately 1 square meter of flowers. This varies by species, so consider the mature size of the plants. A helpful tip: don’t sow all at once. Stagger sowing to extend the blooming season and have a backup if the first sowing doesn’t perform well. A single seed can grow into a full plant, so give them enough space. Store your seeds in a cool, dry place; they remain viable for 2 to 3 years.
