Tips
Craspedia Drumstick should be sown indoors about 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected frost date. The seeds can take several weeks to germinate, even under optimal conditions of around 21°C. You can also direct sow outdoors once the risk of frost has completely passed, usually in May or June. The soil temperature should be at least 15–20°C for good germination. This plant tolerates heat, drought, and poor soil fertility, so additional fertilization or frequent watering is usually unnecessary. Avoid overwatering. Harvest the flowers when about a quarter of the flower head has opened.
How many seeds do you need per square meter?
Each packet contains enough seeds for approximately 1 square meter of flowers. This may vary by variety, so consider the mature plant size. A helpful tip: don’t sow all at once. Stagger your sowing times to extend the blooming season and have a backup in case the first batch is less successful. A single seed can grow into a full plant, so make sure to provide enough space. Store your seeds in a cool, dry place – they’ll remain viable for 2 to 3 years.
How much sun do annual flowers need?
Annuals bloom best in full sun, with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. But the more sun – ideally over 8 hours – the faster and more abundantly they will bloom. In shady spots, flowering may be limited.
Planting instructions:
- Moisten the soil so the seeds adhere well.
- Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil – check the planting depth per variety on the back of the packet or on this page.
- Use fertile, well-drained soil.
- Place the seeds in a sunny spot and protect them from strong winds. Support the plants if needed.
- Water regularly and remove weeds.
