What to do after your narcissus bulbs have finished blooming?

Your narcissus blooms have faded, what now?

Narcissus are truly wonderful spring bloomers. Their cheerful flowers are often the very first signs that spring is on the way. They come in many shapes, colours and sizes. We offer beautifully scented varieties, double-flowered ones and tiny mini narcissus. Yellow narcissus are a timeless favourite, but white narcissus are also incredibly popular. One question we often hear is: what should I do when they are finished blooming?

    Are narcissus winter hardy?

Yes, almost all narcissus bulbs are winter hardy. This means they can stay in the ground throughout the winter. You can let them naturalise in your garden soil. Do not cut off the leaves right away. Instead, let the foliage and stems turn yellow. This is a natural sign that they are dying back. During this time, the bulb absorbs all the energy it needs from the fading leaves to bloom again the following year. In autumn, you can add a bit of organic fertiliser or compost to support strong flowering. With proper care, narcissus will return every spring for five to six years, and often even longer. Once the leaves have completely dried out, usually sometime in July, you can trim or clear them away.

    Lifting and replanting narcissus bulbs

If you prefer not to let your narcissus bulbs naturalise, you can dig them up and replant them elsewhere the next season. Again, wait until the foliage has completely yellowed before lifting. Then you can gently cut the leaves from the bulbs, store them in a dry place and replant them in autumn wherever you want to enjoy them next year.

    Replacing your narcissus bulbs

Sometimes you just feel like something new or a little refresh in your garden. Would you like to enjoy fresh new flowers next year or simply try something different from the narcissus you had before?

Tip: Choose to remove them and replace them with something else. This way, you avoid disappointment. Once you’ve cleared the faded narcissus from your garden, you create space to plant something like dahlia tubers. These will bloom all summer long, right through to October or even November. After that, you can replant the area with tulip bulbs or fresh narcissus bulbs. It’s a lovely way to enjoy colourful flowers in your garden for a much longer time.
