At our flower farm, growing in a sustainable and environmentally conscious way is a top priority. The way we grow our flower bulbs and tubers is constantly evolving, with an increasing focus on eco-friendly practices. Our goal is to deliver the highest quality products with the lowest possible environmental impact. Below, we share how we care for our soil, climate, water, and the role of technology in our sustainable journey.
Healthy soil
We’re always working to build and maintain healthy soil life. Strong, healthy roots make for stronger plants, which helps prevent disease naturally. We regularly take soil samples to check what the ground needs and add organic fertilisers when necessary.
We also rotate our crops to prevent soil exhaustion. We only return to the same plot with the same crop once every five years. This is possible thanks to a strong network of growers who rent and share land with each other to keep all soils healthy and in balance.
Biological protection and water use
Over the years, we’ve significantly reduced the use of crop protection products – and we’re continuing to innovate to lower this even further. We have not used neonicotinoids for years. We regularly test and use biological agents to protect against pests, diseases and weeds whenever possible.
We never use tap water on the fields. If rainwater is not sufficient, we use groundwater through our pump system. If needed, we also make use of ditch water. This way, we reduce our footprint and work in balance with our environment.

On the Way to Planet Proof
Our dahlia nursery is the only one in the world certified with the “On the way to PlanetProof” label – an independent mark for more sustainable products. You can read more about this certification here.
Hubert Weijers • Hubert is Marlies’ husband and has over 30 years of experience in dahlia growing.
Technology
We use modern technology to reduce energy use on the farm. Our greenhouses are equipped with thermal screens that block sunlight during the day and retain heat at night. All our lighting is LED, and we’re currently taking the next step by installing solar panels.

Plastic-free packaging
We pack our dahlia tubers and flower bulbs 100% plastic-free.
Any cardboard we receive is reused as protective filling, for example when shipping glass vases. Plastic that comes in is sorted and recycled properly through our waste stream. This way, we reduce waste and give materials a second life.
Sustainable, market-driven and socially responsible
As growers in the Netherlands, we follow strict government regulations with a strong focus on people and nature. But beyond what is required, we continue to take extra steps every day to grow more sustainably. That way, we can keep bringing joy to our customers far into the future – and that is what drives us every single day.
Through grower study clubs we share knowledge with others and exchange ideas on how we score in areas like energy use, fertilisers and plant protection. We also challenge each other to keep improving – because we believe there is always a better way.
Our flower farms put sustainability first. Not only in how we grow, but in how we do business and care for our team. Our flower bulbs and tubers are pollinator-friendly and safe for butterflies, bees and other insects. They help extend the blooming season. From early spring with tulips and narcissus, all the way into late autumn with flowering dahlias and seed-grown flowers.
Sustainable growing, grounded in nature and shared with joy – that is what we stand for.
