Have you bought narcissus bulbs or are you planning to order some, but not quite sure how to plant them? We’re happy to guide you through it so you can enjoy them again the following year.
Narcissus from FAM Flower Farm
Every early spring, narcissus flowers burst from the ground – often the very first sign that spring has arrived. Narcissus are stunning flowers and come in many different colours. And did you know they smell absolutely lovely? The classic yellow narcissus is the most well-known, but there are also white varieties that look truly magical and fairytale-like.
How to plant narcissus in your garden
Plant your narcissus bulbs in October or November, in a sunny spot. They also grow well in partial shade.
Loosen the soil where you plan to plant. This works best with a spade, but a bulb planter will do the trick too. Dig a hole, and place the bulb in with the pointy side up and the round base down.
Because our narcissus bulbs are large, we recommend planting them 15 cm deep and 15 cm apart. A handy rule of thumb: plant them three times as deep as the height of the bulb.
Once the bulbs are in the ground, cover the hole with the soil you removed and gently press the earth down.
If the ground is dry, give them a little water to help them form roots quickly. This makes them stronger and better protected against heavy rain or frost.
You can also choose to cover them with a layer of leaves or organic material to give them some extra protection in case of a very cold winter.
Taking care of your narcissus
Water the bulbs when the soil is dry, you don’t need to water them daily.
Unlike tulip bulbs, narcissus bulbs are perennial, meaning they return year after year. After flowering, you can cut off the spent blooms, but leave the green leaves in place. This helps the bulb recharge and multiply, so you’ll have even more flowers the following spring.
You can also cut the flowers and place them in a vase – just make sure not to combine them with other flower types.
