Want your dahlia to produce more stems?
Then it’s time to pinch!
When your dahlia plant reaches about 30 to 50 centimetres in height, cut the central shoot just above the third pair of leaves, leaving about one centimetre of stem. This encourages the plant to branch out more broadly, forming a strong, bushy shape that produces even more flowers. In photo 3, you can see how two new shoots emerge on either side of the spot where you pinched the top. Pinching might feel a little scary at first, but don’t worry, the plant will bounce back quickly. And you’ll be rewarded with even more beautiful, unique dahlias.
Another tip:
Regularly remove spent dahlia flowers. Cut the stem back to the next set of leaves or to the first new bud. This directs the plant’s energy toward producing new buds and blooms. If you leave the faded flowers in place, the plant will start forming seed heads and that’s a waste of energy that could go to new blooms.
