Creating a lovely floral display using all kinds of flowers in different vases and jars is easier than you might think. The result is cheerful and full of character. And the best part? You don’t need to be a florist to make something beautiful. Gather all the little vases and jars you have at home. Try seeing teacups or tealight holders differently, because almost anything can be used as a vase. If you have a basket, candle holder or tray that isn’t watertight, simply place a small glass inside. Think of jars from jam or baby food, tins of peas, or slim bottles from salad dressing or apple juice. A collection of wine bottles also creates a lovely effect. Flea markets and thrift stores are great places to find charming vintage vases for just a little. And take a look in your mother’s or grandmother’s cupboard or attic. Often the older, the more special.
Cut a variety of dahlia flowers from your garden. By cutting the blooms, the plant redirects its energy into producing even more flowers. So you get double the joy. Fill the vases with water and place one, two or three flowers in each. Let the heights vary for a playful effect. You might find some beautiful foliage in your garden, or perhaps another flower like a hydrangea to add. In this example, I used a faded allium flower. Even though it’s no longer fresh, it still adds elegance and contrast. If you prefer a more serene look, choose just one type of flower or use vases in the same colour. For example, all in soft blue shades, or use the same kind of vase throughout. That will instantly create a more peaceful atmosphere.
