How to plant tulip bulbs – step by step
Tulip bulbs are best planted once the soil starts to cool down. October, November and even early December are ideal. This gives the bulbs time to grow strong roots before winter arrives. Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot. If the soil is very dry, water the area a little to help the roots settle in.
- Loosen the soil with a spade where you want to plant. This makes the earth soft and easy to work with.
- Dig a hole using a spade or bulb planter.
-
Place the tulip bulbs in the hole with the pointy side facing up and the rounded side down.
Our tulip and narcissus bulbs are large, so plant them about 15 cm deep and 15 cm apart. - Cover the bulbs with the soil you dug out and press down gently.
-
If the soil is dry, water the area right away. This helps the bulbs form roots quickly and protects them from heavy rain or frost.
You can also cover them with a layer of leaves or other organic material for extra winter protection..
Caring for tulips
If the winter is very dry, give your tulips a little water now and then. Other than that, they don’t need much care.
In spring, they will reward you with beautiful blooms. Once the flowers fade and the petals fall, you can remove the old flower heads if you like. Most tulips are not perennial. That means it’s best to lift the bulbs after flowering and plant fresh ones next season. But if you’d like to try keeping them for another year, that’s also possible.
If you follow the right steps, they might bloom again. You can read all about how to do that here.
