    How to plant gladiolus bulbs

    When to plant gladiolus

The best time to plant gladiolus is in spring, once the risk of frost has passed. This is usually from April to early June. By planting the bulbs a few weeks apart, you can create a longer flowering period and enjoy their beautiful colours all summer long. The latest time to plant gladiolus bulbs is around June 21 (the longest day); they will still bloom in October. The growing period from planting to flowering is approximately 70–90 days.

    When to plant gladiolus

The best time to plant gladiolus is in spring, as soon as the risk of frost has passed. This is usually from April to early June. By planting the bulbs a few weeks apart, you can create a longer flowering period and enjoy their beautiful colours all summer long. The latest possible time to plant gladiolus bulbs is around June 21 (the longest day); they will still bloom in October. The growing time from planting to flowering is approximately 70–90 days.

    How to plant gladiolus

    • Soil preparation: Loosen the soil and add some compost or organic fertilizer if needed for extra nutrients
    • Planting the bulbs: Plant the bulbs about 10 cm deep with the point facing up. Leave 10–15 cm of space between the bulbs to allow enough room for growth
    • Watering: Water immediately after planting, but make sure the soil does not become soggy

This is what gladiolus bulbs look like, they are somewhat purple-red in colour and flatter than tulip or narcissus bulbs.

    The perfect spot for gladiolus

Gladiolus loves the sun, so choose a spot in your garden where they get at least six hours of sunlight a day. The soil should be well-drained, as these flowers do not like wet feet.

    Why not in pots?

Although it may be tempting to plant gladiolus in pots, we advise against it. Gladiolus develops deep roots and tall stems, making them less stable in containers. They also need rich, loose soil to grow and bloom well. In a pot, the soil dries out more quickly, which means more care and watering is needed. For the best results, it’s better to plant them directly in the ground.

After flowering: What to do with the bulbs

Once the flowers have faded, you can cut off the stems. Leave the foliage in place so the bulbs can store energy for the next year. In autumn, before the first frost, you can dig up the bulbs and store them in a cool, dry place.

Gladiolus is a wonderful addition to any garden. By planting them directly in the ground in a sunny spot and giving them proper care, you’ll enjoy a colourful display for months. Avoid planting in pots to prevent instability and poor growth.

    Care for your gladiolus

    • Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry weather
    • Supporting: Gladiolus can grow up to 1.2 metres tall. Use bamboo sticks or plant supports to prevent them from falling over
    • Fertilising: Apply extra feed halfway through the growing season, such as potassium-rich fertiliser, to encourage flowering

How tall do gladiolus flowers grow

The height of gladiolus depends on the variety and ranges between 100 and 130 cm:

Large-flowered gladiolus grow between 110 and 130 cm, and Flamenco types between 100 and 130 cm. The so-called gladdies are more compact and grow between 60 and 90 cm. We have two gladdie varieties in our collection: Kelly & Tina.
