Ready to brighten up your garden with a stunning palette of colours that bloom all spring long? Try planting a flower bulb lasagne!
This fun and clever technique fills your pots with layer after layer of blooming beauty. It’s super easy, ideal for beginner gardeners, and so satisfying to do.
What is a Flower Bulb Lasagne?
A flower bulb lasagne is a layered planting method – just like making a lasagne in the kitchen. You plant flower bulbs in different layers, with each layer blooming at a different time. The result? A cheerful surprise of colours and flowers, one after the other, all spring long.
What you’ll need for your lasagne planting
Before you begin, gather the following supplies:
- A large, deep pot (at least 20 to 25 cm high) with drainage holes
- Good-quality potting soil
-
Flower bulbs in different heights and bloom times:
- Bottom layer: tallest bloomers, like narcissus
- Middle layer: mid-height flowers, like tulips
- Top layer: shortest bloomers, like muscari
Step-by-step guide to planting your flower bulb lasagne
1. Prepare the pot
- Choose a deep pot with good drainage. This prevents the bulbs from sitting in water.
- Add a layer of clay pebbles or broken pots at the bottom, then about 10 cm of potting soil.
2. Plant the first layer – tallest bloomers
- Place the largest bulbs, like narcissus, at the bottom layer. Pointy side up, and make sure they don’t touch each other.
- Cover with 5 cm of soil.
3. Plant the second layer – mid-height bloomers
- Add tulips or other medium-sized bulbs on top. Again, keep some space between each bulb.
- Cover with another 5 cm of soil.
4. Plant the third layer – shortest bloomers
- Now it’s time for the smallest bulbs, like muscari. Spread them out evenly.
- Cover with the final layer of soil, stopping about 2 cm below the rim of the pot.
5. Water and wait
- Water well so the bulbs can settle and start forming roots.
- Keep the pot in a cool, sheltered place for the winter.
- Once spring returns, move it into the sun and enjoy the show.

Let’s get started...
10 seedlings per square metre is more than enough for a generous picking garden. Good luck and most of all, have fun.
