How many flower bulbs should you plant per M²?

A question we hear often from garden lovers: “How many flower bulbs should I plant per square metre?”

Let’s clear that up for you and help you on your way to a garden full of colourful blooms. The number of bulbs you need depends on the type of flower and the effect you want to create. Some varieties, like tulips, crocuses and narcissus, need a bit more space to thrive. Others, like snowdrops or muscari, can be planted more closely together.

As a general guideline, plant flower bulbs about 8 to 15 cm apart, which works out to about 40 to 90 bulbs per square metre.

For a more natural look, you can vary the spacing to create a playful pattern. Mix different types and colours to form a vibrant, layered carpet of flowers.

    For tulips and narcissus bulbs:

If you plant the bulbs 10 cm apart, you’ll need about 90 bulbs per m².

    A bag of 10 bulbs covers approximately 35 x 35 cm.

If you plant the bulbs 15 cm apart, you’ll need about 45 bulbs per m².

    A bag of 10 bulbs covers approximately 45 x 45 cm.

    Small bulbs

For smaller bulbs like snowdrops and grape hyacinths (muscari), you can plant them even closer together: about 5 to 8 cm apart.

These little bulbs look beautiful in larger clusters and create a soft, magical effect.

    In summary:

If you plant small bulbs 5 cm apart, you’ll need about 175 bulbs per m².

Small bulbs like muscari, snowdrops and miniature narcissus multiply over time, so you don’t need to fill the entire square metre right away.

In pots, 10 to 20 bulbs is often more than enough.

A bag of 10 small bulbs will cover approximately 20 x 20 cm.

    • Combine different types of bulbs for a colourful and varied flower meadow.
    • Play with different heights by mixing tall and short bloomers.
    • Plant your bulbs once the temperature drops below 15°C – this reduces the chance of fungus and bacteria.

Good to know: you can hardly go wrong. Planting flowerbulbs is a matter of personal taste, so just enjoy the process and create a lush garden full of colour and life.
