A common question among flower lovers is: “How many dahlia tubers should I plant per square metre?” Let’s answer this important question and guide you towards a garden bursting with blooming beauty.
The recommended spacing for dahlias depends on the type and size of the plant, as well as your personal style, the space you have, and the look you want to achieve. In general, smaller dahlia varieties can be planted closer together than larger ones.
Here’s a quick guide:
Low-growing dahlias (under 50 cm): plant the tubers approx. 30 cm apart
Medium dahlias (50–90 cm): plant about 45–50 cm apart
Tall dahlias (over 90 cm): plant about 50–60 cm apart
When planting, make sure there’s enough airflow between the plants: this helps prevent mildew and other plant diseases.
If in doubt, it’s better to start with a slightly wider spacing.
For a cutting garden
Planning a cutting garden? Then the best layout is to plant two rows side by side with 30 cm between the rows, and 25 cm between each tuber within the rows.
Just remember to leave space for walking paths: otherwise you might damage the plants when harvesting your flowers.

All dahlias can be picked and placed in a vase, but we’ve selected these special varieties based on three key criteria:
- Long stems
- High flower production
- Long vase life (over 4 days)
Dahlias in pots
Use a large pot with good drainage and plant 1 tuber per pot.
If your pot is over 50 cm in diameter, you can plant 2 or even 3 tubers.
Compact varieties are easiest to grow in pots. The taller the variety, the bigger the pot they need to grow strong roots and the more care they’ll need.
Water regularly: about twice a week.
Once your dahlias grow taller, support them with a few stakes to help them stand strong.
