How Long Do Flower Seeds Take to Germinate?

Every flower starts with a tiny seed

Isn't it amazing that something so small contains everything it needs to grow into a strong, colourful flowering plant in just one season? One of the most common questions when growing flowers from seed is: How long do flower seeds take to germinate? The short answer: most flower seeds germinate within 5 days to 3 weeks. However, the exact germination time depends on the flower variety and the conditions in which you sow your seeds.

We'll explain what affects seed germination and share our best tips to help your flower seeds germinate successfully!

    How Do Flower Seeds Germinate?

The seed germination process begins as soon as a flower seed absorbs enough moisture. The seed takes in water, its outer coating softens and the first tiny root begins to develop beneath the soil. This early stage often happens completely out of sight. It might look as though nothing is happening, but beneath the surface, your seed is already laying the foundations for a strong, healthy plant!

Once the roots have started developing, a tiny shoot begins to grow upwards towards the light. Before you know it, the first little green seedling appears!

How Long Does It Take for Flower Seeds to Germinate?

At FAM Flower Farm, you'll find a beautiful selection of annual flower seeds, perfect for growing in garden borders, pots, cut flower gardens and, eventually, picking for your own gorgeous bouquets. The germination time of flower seeds varies depending on the variety. Some fast-growing flowers produce their first tiny green shoots within just a week, while others take a little longer. Seed size can sometimes play a role, but temperature, moisture and the specific needs of each flower variety are usually more important. Some seeds need warmth to germinate, while others prefer cooler conditions.

With a little patience and the right growing conditions, those tiny seeds will soon be on their way to becoming beautiful flowers!

Here are a few of our favourite flower seeds and their germination times:

    • Fast-germinating seeds: Usually germinate within 5 to 10 days, including zinnias, cosmos and sunflowers.
    • Medium-germinating seeds: Typically take 10 to 21 days to germinate, such as snapdragons, amaranthus and dill.
    • Slow-germinating seeds: Some varieties can take 3 to 4 weeks to germinate, such as Malva sylvestris 'Zebrina'.

Keep in mind that not all flowers are equally suitable for growing in small pots. Sunflowers and amaranthus, for example, generally need more space and nutrients as they grow than smaller varieties such as cornflowers or compact cosmos.

Our tip: Always check the recommended sowing instructions for each flower variety. With the right temperature, moisture and growing conditions, you'll give your seeds the best possible start!

Should You Start Flower Seeds Indoors or Sow Them Directly Outside?

Want to enjoy your flowers earlier in the season? Then starting flower seeds indoors is a great idea! Indoor sowing allows you to get a head start on the growing season, especially when outdoor temperatures are still unpredictable.

The easiest way to start is by using seed trays. Sow your seeds thinly, gently press them into the compost and cover them according to the variety's sowing instructions. Keep the compost evenly moist but not waterlogged, and place the trays in a bright spot at around 18–22°C, depending on the needs of the seeds.

Once your seedlings have developed their first true leaves and outdoor temperatures are warm enough, you can start hardening off your seedlings. This means gradually getting them used to outdoor conditions by placing them outside for a little longer each day over approximately a week. This helps them adjust to sunlight, wind and changing temperatures before you plant them in the garden.

Prefer to keep things simple? You can also sow your flower seeds directly outdoors at the right time of year!

For many summer flowering varieties, direct sowing outdoors is possible from April or May, depending on the weather. For frost-tender flowers such as zinnias and cosmos, wait until the risk of overnight frost has passed and the soil has warmed up sufficiently.

Some hardy annual flowers, however, can be sown outdoors earlier in spring or even in autumn.

Remember that seeds germinate more slowly in cold, wet soil, and young seedlings are more likely to struggle in these conditions. A little patience and the right timing will give your flowers the best possible start!

Why are my flower seeds taking so long to germinate?

If your flower seeds aren't germinating within the expected time, it's usually down to the growing conditions. Soil that's too wet can cause seeds to rot before they have a chance to germinate. Sowing seeds too deeply can make it difficult for the young shoots to reach the surface, while low temperatures can slow down germination considerably.

That's why we recommend keeping the compost lightly moist but never waterlogged and sowing your seeds at the correct depth. Some flower seeds even need light to germinate, so they should be left uncovered or only lightly pressed into the compost.

Always check the sowing instructions for your chosen flower variety. With the right combination of warmth, moisture and light, you'll give your seeds the best chance of successful germination!
