Choosing the right location for your plants is essential for healthy growth and flowering. Two common terms you’ll come across when selecting plants are ‘full sun’ and ‘partial shade’. But what do these terms actually mean, and how do they affect the growth of your garden plants?
Full sun
Plants like dahlias and most annual flower seeds thrive in full sun. This means they need at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. These sun-loving plants bloom best when they’re exposed to plenty of sunshine throughout the day. The more sunlight they get, the more flowers they will produce.
Tips for planting in full sun:
- Choose a spot that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Keep an eye on soil moisture, as full sun can dry out the soil more quickly.
- Consider adding mulch to help retain moisture and reduce weeds.
Partial shade
Plants that prefer partial shade need around three to six hours of sunlight per day, and benefit from some protection from the strong midday sun. An ideal location could be one with filtered sunlight, such as under a tree, or an area that gets gentle morning sun. Flower bulbs like tulips, narcissus, and muscari can be planted in both full sun and partial shade.
Tips for planting in partial shade:
- Look for a location with morning sun or dappled light, for example beneath tree branches.
- Make sure the soil drains well, to avoid standing water.
- Water regularly, especially during dry periods.
General care tips:
- Soil quality: Use well-draining soil to prevent excess moisture and root rot.
- Watering: Water regularly during dry spells, but avoid overwatering.
- Sun hours: The fewer hours of sunlight a plant receives, the less abundantly it will bloom. Take time to observe where the sunny and shady spots are in your garden.
What if you have less sunlight?
If your garden doesn’t get as many hours of sun as ideal, don’t worry. You can still enjoy a colourful and vibrant garden by choosing plants that thrive in low-light conditions, like tulip or narcissus bulbs. You can also create height with pots and containers so you can move your plants around and make the most of the available sunlight.
Every plant is different. Watch how they respond to their location and adjust your care accordingly. Whether in full sun or gentle shade, the right spot gives your garden the best chance to thrive.
Muscari and snowdrops also grow beautifully in partial or shaded areas.
