Basil Spice Boys Ararat features metallic grey-purple leaves that deepen to a darker purple when blooming.

The leaves have an anise flavour and are widely used in salads.

We prefer to see this purple basil in a beautiful bouquet, but you should definitely taste a leaf! Basil is heavily used in Italian cuisine, making it an ideal addition to any garden or vegetable patch for every (home) cook.

In Dutch, this perennial herb is also called Holy Basil.

    Tips

    When to sow
    • Indoor sowing: From March–April, in pots in a warm, bright spot. This prevents cold damage in early spring.
    • Direct outdoor sowing: From mid-May, once the risk of frost has completely passed and night temperatures remain above 10°C.
    Sowing method
    • Sowing depth: Sow the seeds on the surface and gently rake the soil over them. This prevents them from being washed away during heavy rain.
    • Spacing: Sow one seed per centimeter in rows with 30–40 cm spacing to allow room for growth and air circulation.
    • Germination temperature: Between 20–25°C. Seeds usually germinate within 7–14 days.
    Location and soil
    • Light: Full sun is essential for good growth and flavor development.
    • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil with added compost for extra nutrients.
    Care
    • Watering: Keep soil lightly moist but avoid leaving roots in standing water. Water at the base of the plant to prevent mold.
    • Pinching: Regularly pinch the tops of the plant to encourage side shoots and bushier growth.
    • Protection: Place the plant in a sheltered spot and protect from sudden cold or wind, as basil is sensitive to low temperatures.
    Harvest and use
    • Harvest for consumption: Pick leaves regularly, preferably before flowering, for the best taste and aroma.
    • Drying: This type of basil is also suitable for drying. Hang the stems upside down in a dry, airy place.
    • Extra tips
    • Not winter-hardy: This is an annual plant that will die once temperatures fall below 10°C.
    • Companion planting: Suitable to plant alongside tomatoes and peppers, as basil repels insects.
How many seeds do you need per square meter?

Each packet contains enough seeds for approximately 1 square meter of flowers. This may vary by variety, so consider the mature size of the plants. A helpful tip: don’t sow all at once. Stagger your sowing times to extend the flowering season and have a backup in case the first round is less successful. A single seed can grow into a full plant, so give the seeds enough room. Store your seeds in a cool, dry place – they will remain viable for 2 to 3 years.
