Tips
When to sow
- Indoor sowing: From March–April for an early start.
- Direct outdoor sowing: From May–June, once all risk of frost has passed.
Sowing method
- Sowing depth: Sow the seeds on the surface and press them lightly into the soil without covering, as they need light to germinate.
- Spacing: Keep 30–40 cm between plants for proper air circulation and room to grow.
- Germination temperature: Between 18–22°C, with germination in about 10–20 days.
Location and soil
- Light: Full sun for best blooming, though light partial shade is tolerated.
- Soil: Well-drained, dry to moderately moist soil. Achillea thrives in poor soils and is highly drought-tolerant.
Care
- Watering: Water only during dry spells, as Achillea prefers dry conditions.
- Pinching: Pinch back young plants to encourage bushier growth and more branching.
- Pruning: Remove spent flowers to prolong blooming and promote new flower clusters.
Harvesting and drying
- Harvest time: Cut flowers when fully open but before they start to fade.
- Drying: Hang the stems upside down in a dry, airy spot to dry for use in dried bouquets.
Extra tips
- Winter hardy: Achillea is perennial and will return year after year.
- Self-seeding: Allow some flowers to go to seed for natural self-sowing.
- Combining: Pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, lavender, and salvia for a natural look.
How many seeds do you need per square meter?
Each packet contains enough seeds for about 1 square meter of flowers. This can vary by variety, so consider the mature plant size. A helpful tip: don’t sow all at once. Spread out your sowings over time to extend the blooming season and have a backup in case the first batch doesn’t thrive. A single seed can grow into a full plant, so give them enough space. Store your seeds in a cool, dry place – they will remain viable for 2 to 3 years.
