Types of double tulips

There are two groups of double tulips: early blooming and late blooming varieties. Double tulips are very popular and were even named Bulb of the Year in 2017. One of the most loved varieties is the Ice Cream tulip. This unique flower is one of the most photographed tulips at the Keukenhof due to its extraordinary appearance. What’s the difference between double tulips and peony tulips?

Peony tulips are essentially the same as double tulips. They are known for their large blooms that open up and resemble peonies. Peony tulips often bloom later in spring, allowing for a long lasting floral display.

History of double tulips

The Dutch first discovered double tulips in Asia during the 17th century. The tulips had developed extra petals through natural selection and accidental cross pollination. Enthralled by their unusual form and peony like beauty, the Dutch began cultivating these varieties, leading to the development of many new types through hybridization.
