Potted dahlias are the perfect solution if your garden borders don’t get enough sun. It’s tempting to go for tall plants with big flowers, but in a garden, a compact potted dahlia of around 50 centimeters has its own charm. These low-growing dahlias are also known as patio dahlias or bedding dahlias. Their advantage is that they tend to branch out widely, bloom early, and produce lots of flowers. With these lush blooming pots, you can create little flower parties along paths and in cozy garden corners. It adds a wonderful ambiance to your garden. Potted dahlias come in many colors and look adorable in small vases or floral arrangements. Where can you use potted dahlias?

The low-growing dahlia Diana’s Memory is a favorite thanks to its creamy blooms with a soft yellow center. The flower shifts in color from cream to light pink.

Dahlias come in many shapes and colors

There are various types of dahlias in all kinds of shapes and colors. For example: pompon, ball, double or single dahlias, decorative and cactus dahlias. Dahlia tubers are also called dahlia bulbs or dahlia flower bulbs. Easily find your favorite varieties using the filters in our webshop.

Lower-growing dahlias are perfect for pots. Taller varieties are ideal for cutting gardens because of their long stems and plentiful flowers. Some dahlias are especially attractive to bees and butterflies, particularly single dahlias with open centers.

At checkout, you can choose when you want your tubers delivered. Want to start them early indoors? Then select delivery in April so they’ll bloom sooner and are less vulnerable to slugs. Or choose May for immediate outdoor planting.

When to plant dahlia tubers?

Dahlias are fantastic summer bloomers originally from Mexico. They love warmth. Tubers grow well in almost any soil, as long as it’s well-draining and not too dry. Plant the tubers about 2 cm below the surface so they can feel the warmth of the sun. The ideal planting time is in spring, after the risk of frost has passed. So from mid-May to mid-June. They bloom from July until the first night frost in October or November.

Caring for dahlias

Dahlias require little maintenance. In dry weather, water them regularly. Tall dahlias should be supported so they don’t fall over in strong wind. You can also pinch back the plants to keep them shorter and encourage more blooms.

Unfortunately, dahlias are not winter hardy. Tubers left in the ground may survive a mild winter, but won’t make it through a hard freeze. If you want to keep them, lift them from the soil before the frost arrives.
