Tips
When to sow Bupleurum
Direct sowing outdoors: From April to May, as soon as the risk of frost has completely passed. Since Bupleurum does not tolerate transplanting well, it is important to sow the seeds directly at their final growing spot.
Sowing method
Sowing depth: Sow the seeds shallowly and press them lightly into the soil. Cover with a thin layer of soil about 0.5 cm.
Spacing: Keep 20-30 cm between plants for sufficient growth space and air circulation.
Germination temperature: Between 15-20°C, with a germination time of 14-21 days.
Location and soil
Light: Full sun to light partial shade. The flowers develop best in full sun.
Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil. Add compost to encourage growth.
Care
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during germination and dry periods.
Thinning: If the seedlings are too close together, thin them out to promote strong, healthy plants.
Support: For longer stems, light support may be needed, especially in strong winds.
Harvesting and drying
Harvesting moment: Harvest the flowers once the flower heads start to show color.
Drying: Want to dry the flowers? Let them fully open and hang the stems upside down in a dry, airy place to dry.
Combining: Pairs beautifully with flowers like cosmos, dill, and Ammi in natural or wild bouquets.
How many seeds do you need per square meter?
Each packet contains enough seeds for about 1 square meter of flowers. This can vary per variety, so consider the mature size of the plants. A helpful tip: don’t sow everything at once. Spread out the sowing over several moments. This extends the flowering season and provides a backup in case the first round doesn't perform well. A single seed can grow into a full plant, so give the seeds enough room to grow. Store your seeds in a cool, dry place and they will remain viable for 2 to 3 years.
