Amaranthus Coral Fountain
The impressive flowers of Amaranthus Coral Fountain give a special touch to every floral arrangement. The flowers extend downwards, which offers many creative possibilities. The Coral Fountain’s chic dusky pink colour, reminiscent of antique velvet, combines well with other flowers. The annual summer flower is also suitable as a dried flower. Tips
When to Sow Amaranthus
- Indoor sowing: From March-April to advance flowering.
- Direct outdoor sowing: From April/May, once the risk of frost has completely passed.
Sowing Method
- Sowing depth: Sow the small seeds shallowly and press them lightly without covering, as they need light to germinate.
- Spacing: Do not sow too densely. Thin young plants to a spacing of 30-40 cm to prevent overcrowding.
- Germination temperature: Between 18-22°C. Seeds usually germinate within 10-21 days.
Location and Soil
- Light: Full sun is ideal for strong growth and rich flowering.
- Soil: Suitable for any soil type as long as it is well-drained. Amaranthus grows best in fertile soil but also performs well on poor soils.
Care
- Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods, to prolong flowering.
- Pinching: Pinch out the tip of young plants once they reach about 20-30 cm tall. This encourages the formation of more side shoots and increases flower production.
- Support: Larger varieties may require support to prevent them from falling over in strong winds.
Harvesting and Drying
- Harvest time: Cut the flowers when fully developed but still firm.
- Drying: Hang the flowers upside down in a dry, airy place to dry for use in dried flower arrangements.
- Combining: Amaranthus combines well with sunflowers, dahlias, and ornamental grasses for a natural, playful border.
How Many Seeds Do You Need Per Square Meter?
Each packet contains enough seeds for approximately 1 square meter of flowers. This varies by variety, so consider the mature size of the plants. A useful tip: don’t sow all at once. Spread sowing over several sessions. This extends the flowering season and provides a backup if the first sowing doesn’t work well. A single seed can grow into a full plant, so give seeds enough space to grow. Store seeds in a cool, dry place to keep them viable for 2 to 3 years.
