Yellow narcissus bulbs

Yellow narcissus have the perfect spring color and are shipped directly from our nursery to your home. Yellow is the color everyone longs for after the dark winter months. It is, after all, the color of the sun. The sun represents light and life. In earlier times, yellow was central to original light festivals, which is why it’s seen as the perfect Easter color. The blooming of narcissus is often one of the first signs of spring.

But thinking only of yellow narcissus misses the full picture. There are many varieties. There are white narcissus, cream-colored narcissus, pink narcissus, and orange trumpet narcissus. There are also single and double narcissus. Single narcissus are especially loved by butterflies and bees. Finally, there are a number of  special narcissus varieties. Narcissus are very easy and rewarding spring bloomers that, like perennials, return each year on their own. Give them a sunny spot and you can enjoy them every spring again.

Planting narcissus bulbs

Narcissus bulbs love the cold. They actually need it to bloom. It is best to plant the bulbs in autumn, in October, November, or December. But be sure to plant them before December 15, so they have time to root before the harsh frost sets in. Our large-sized narcissus bulbs ensure beautiful full blooms come springtime. We cannot wait.

How to plant narcissus bulbs

Wild narcissus originally grow in grasslands. Narcissus bulbs can therefore be planted in scattered natural groups throughout your garden. You can also plant them in large clusters in beds or in pots. Narcissus dislike soggy feet, so ensure good drainage. Loosen the soil, plant the narcissus bulbs point side up, cover with soil, press lightly, and you are done. All necessary nutrients are already in the bulb, so it is nearly foolproof. Of course, we include a detailed planting guide with our bulbs.

Narcissus bloom time

Narcissus are in bloom from March through April. Tourists from around the world and nearby travel to the world renowned flower fields in Lisse. But why travel if you can grow them in your own garden?

Narcissus care

Narcissus are easy and grateful spring bloomers that require little maintenance. It is important to water regularly during dry periods. The narcissus is a perennial bulb plant, so proper post bloom care is crucial for bloom recurrence next year.

Post bloom care

Let spent flowers wither on their own or cut them off, but leave the foliage. It is crucial to allow the foliage to turn yellow. This benefits the bulb. As soon as the foliage is completely yellow, you can remove it or mulch over it. In winter, you can leave the bulbs in the ground, covering them with leaves from the garden if desired.

Some narcissus varieties remain short with small blooms, while others grow taller with larger blooms. Most bulbs produce multiple flowers with a delightful scent. Pure enjoyment.

Narcissus in pots

Narcissus bulbs do very well in pots. They bloom in spring, and you can enjoy your flower garden on patios or balconies. Plant densely so you can also pick some flowers to enjoy indoors.

A bit of narcissus history

The narcissus is named after a youth from Greek mythology. Narcissus was the son of the river god Cephisus and the nymph Liriope. He was the most handsome boy in Greece, admired by all men and women. But he was indifferent to love, spending much time hunting. One day, he saw his own reflection in a pond and fell deeply in love with the image. He stayed by the pond until he died, never finding what he sought. He forgot to eat and drink and wasted away. After his death, Aphrodite transformed him into a yellow flower, the narcissus, so he would be remembered forever. Psychologist Sigmund Freud used Narcissus's story to name people obsessed with their own beauty or greatness: narcissists.
